Botox & Juvéderm You’ve been dying to ask. So go ahead… Botox™ is a purified protein that has the ability to relax muscles into which it is injected. This relaxation may be partial or complete, depending on the amount of Botox used and on the relative strength of the muscle into which it is injected. The relaxation produced by Botox is temporary (usually 3-6 months), as the treated muscle will gradually 'wake up' over time. Any person who wishes to minimize the aging process around the eyes and forehead region with minimal down time is an appropriate candidate for Botox injections. Botox is also an excellent treatment for Hyperhydrosis (excessive sweating). Botox™ is not recommended for women who are pregnant or are nursing. Can Botox™ and Juvéderm™ be Administered simultaneously? One of the greatest combination treatments involves the simultaneous use of Botox™ and Juvéderm™. With this combo treatment, an "instant face lift" may be achieved by using Botox™ in the brow and forehead region, and Juvéderm™ around the mouth and lips to instantly restore your skin's volume and smooth away facial wrinkles and folds, like your “smile lines” or “parentheses” (nasolabial folds—the creases that run from the bottom of your nose to the corners of your mouth). Does it hurt? Typically no anesthetic is needed for Botox™ injections. A small amount of Botox™ is administered using a very fine needle. Most patients experience very minimal discomfort. Anesthetic creams are available to increase your comfort. Dental blocks or topical anesthetics may be used for Juvéderm™ injections, depending on the injection site. Most patients who desire lip enhancement also request a dental block for maximum comfort. What is the recovery like? In general, no recovery time is needed for Juvéderm™ or Botox™. Both treatments may be administered during a lunch break. With Botox™ you will be instructed not to rub the treated area for a couple of hours after the treatment. It is also a good idea to try to 'exercise' the treated muscles for the first few hours following the treatment, as this will increase the effectiveness of the Botox™ treatment. Typically, it takes 4-5 days for the Botox™ to start to take effect, but it may take up to 2 weeks for its full effect. Results generally last between 3-6 months for facial Botox™ treatments, and up to one year for Hyperhydrosis therapy. |
